Trump Signals Progress in China Trade Talks During Surprise White House Appearance

Mentions ongoing talks with China during impromptu appearance at White House

Washington, D.C. — April 24 – President Donald Trump made brief remarks to reporters outside the White House on Wednesday, offering a short update on his trade agenda as he returned from inspecting possible locations for a new flag pole on the North Lawn.

Speaking informally near the driveway, the president said his administration is “actively engaged” in trade negotiations with China and hinted at further developments in the coming weeks.

“We’re in talks with China—serious talks,” Trump said. “We’re going to get a good deal, or we won’t do one. But progress is being made.”

While he did not provide specific details or timelines, Trump’s comments come amid renewed tensions with Beijing over tariffs and trade imbalances. His administration has continued to use tariffs as a central tool in its economic policy, despite domestic pushback and international criticism.

The president’s unscheduled remarks lasted just a few minutes before he waved to reporters and returned inside the White House.

Trump’s brief appearance followed a walk across the North Lawn where he personally reviewed several proposed sites for a new flag pole—part of what aides describe as an initiative to "restore patriotic symbols" around the executive grounds.
